Powder Mixing
Powder mixing is an important part of any powder
processing industry. The equipment and the process is simpler than many
other mixing processes, the type of mixer depends on the texture of the
ingredients. The modern powder mixers though have to perform other
functions like, coating or granulating apart from simple mixing that
makes the modern equipment a little more complex.
For Free Flowing Powders - The process is called convective
mixing. The ingredients are layered one upon the other in the mixer.
Ribbon or screw mixing tool is used. With this tool the ingredients are
transported to the mixer continuously being mixed. The duration and
speed determine the homogeneity.
For Cohesive Powders - The process is called intensive mixing.
Convective mixing simply mixes the powders at a macroscopic level. It is
not able to break through the cohesiveness of the powder that is
actually caused by the liquid bridges. To break these structures,
excessive forces are applied using higher speed and impact like choppers
and knives. These types of impact mixers are used for almost
all-industrial purposes. Shear mixers are also used for the purpose.
